New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office said on October 17 that New Orleans Police Department patrol officer Derrick Burmaster surrendered that morning and was booked on one count of aggravated assault with a firearm. Burmaster, 47, is a resident of Slidell.

According to the sheriff's office, the alleged incident occurred in the early morning hours of October 2 at a residence in the 3300 block of Bellwick Bay Drive in Slidell, where Burmaster is accused of brandishing his NOPD-issued firearm during an argument with his roommate. Detectives with the sheriff's office Persons Crimes Unit investigated and obtained an arrest warrant on October 16. Burmaster surrendered at the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on the morning of October 17 and was booked on the charge; his bond was set at $15,000. The charge is an allegation, and Burmaster is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

In a statement, the New Orleans Police Department said its Public Integrity Bureau has opened an investigation into the allegations involving Officer Derrick Burmaster, that he has been placed on emergency suspension without pay, and that his police powers have been revoked, with those administrative actions to remain in effect pending the outcome of the investigation.
