Phoenix Awards $116,000 in Food Systems Grants; Four District 4 Projects Share $76,000

Phoenix is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. Four organizations serving Phoenix's District 4 will share $76,000 through the city's 2027 Food Systems Grant cycle, part of $116,000 awarded citywide by the Phoenix Office of Environmental Programs to six selected projects, according to a city announcement.

The projects range from school-based farming to Indigenous cooking workshops, recovery-focused meals and neighborhood produce markets. The Osborn School District received $20,000 for 'From Seed to Student,' a year-long farm-to-school project expected to reach 300 to 360 students in grades three through five. Students will grow and harvest food using hydroponic Flex Farms, take cooking and nutrition lessons centered on Arizona-grown foods, and bring produce home through student-run farmers' markets; the program also includes purchasing from local farmers and developing a curriculum other schools can adopt.

Demand rose sharply this cycle: the office received 90 proposals requesting $1.65 million, compared with 49 applications seeking more than $900,000 in the 2026 cycle. 'District 4 families know that good food is about more than a meal. It's about health, culture and community,' said Councilwoman Laura Pastor.
