Portland Marks Arbor Day at Harrison Park With 15 New Trees Planted and 300 Free Yard Trees Given Away
Portland is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon. Portland Parks & Recreation's (PPR) Urban Forestry division held the city's 2026 Arbor Day celebration on October 17 at Harrison Park in Southeast Portland, at 2101 SE 84th Ave near the park's main entrance at SE 84th Avenue and Harrison Street, in the Jade District.
From 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Yard Tree Giveaway team handed out 300 free trees at the event; residents could sign up in advance to receive one, or register at Arbor Day for pickup at a future event. During the celebration held with community organization APANO from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers working two planting shifts (10 to 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.) planted 15 young trees in Harrison Park to add shade, beauty and cleaner air to the Jade District. The program also included the reading of the Portland Arbor Day Proclamation, presentation of the Bill Naito Community Trees Award and Tree City USA awards, dance performances, and an Arbor Day Bike Bus run with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT).
Community organizations including Friends of Trees, the Division Midway Alliance and the Cambodian American Community of Oregon tabled at the event, alongside tree-themed arts and crafts, bucket truck rides and local food. Urban Forestry says Portland's urban forest consists of 251,180 street trees and about 1.2 million park trees; the division issues permits for planting, pruning and removal of all public and some private trees and is on call around the clock for tree emergencies.
Portland's Arbor Day gathers each autumn at a local park or school to welcome the season and plant new trees ahead of the rainy season. This year's event, organized by Urban Forestry with APANO and other community partners, was free and open to residents of all ages.
