Hemet — Hemet is a city in Riverside County, California. The Hemet City Council's October 13 meeting at the Council Chamber, 450 E. Latham Ave., included Resolution 2026-168, a proposal to appropriate up to $759,000 from the Police Measure U fund balance to restore funding for nine frozen Police Department positions for the rest of fiscal year 2026-27, the Hemet & San Jacinto Chronicle reported.

The nine positions are six full-time police officers, one full-time community services officer, one full-time outreach and engagement specialist, and one temporary part-time civilian investigator. City documents estimate the full-year cost at about $1.301 million if all nine are filled, with ongoing funding to be set in the fiscal 2027-28 budget; the preliminary Police Measure U fund balance was about $13.0 million as of July 1.

Measure U is the 1 percent transactions and use tax approved by Hemet voters in 2016 and restricted by council resolution to public safety. The Measure U Citizens' Oversight Committee recommended the appropriation unanimously on September 22.
