M6.9 Earthquake Strikes Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula; No Tsunami Threat

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · World News · GSM News

A strong earthquake registered by the U.S. Geological Survey as magnitude 6.9 struck Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula at 03:35 UTC on October 16, 2026, with its epicenter about 76 km northeast of Ozernovskiy at a depth of roughly 135 to 143 km. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there is no tsunami threat from the earthquake, and the USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses, indicating a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

TASS, citing the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Geophysical Service, reported that scientists initially estimated the magnitude at 6.5 before revising it to 6.9, and that instrumental intensity in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky reached up to four points, with the quake felt at about magnitude 5 in the regional capital. Some residents evacuated their apartments as light fixtures swung, doors slammed and tableware rattled during shaking that lasted about a minute.

The USGS estimated that about 14,000 people felt moderate shaking and 214,000 felt light shaking. Kamchatka lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. No casualties or major damage have been reported. (GSM, based on USGS and TASS reporting)
