Singapore Warns 7 Indonesian Firms Over Haze as FA Cup Final Is Postponed

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Singapore has issued warnings to seven companies in Indonesia linked to forest fires causing toxic haze across Southeast Asia. Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said on October 16 that investigations indicate some of the haze experienced by Singapore originated from fires on the land of seven companies on Sumatra. Singapore will serve preventive notices under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act, requiring the firms to deploy firefighting teams, halt all burning and land clearing with fire, and submit fire management plans to the National Environment Agency.

Fu said measures such as fines or legal prosecution remain under consideration if the companies fail to comply. The seven firms are reportedly mostly suppliers of wood for Sumatra's pulp and paper industry.

The haze has disrupted daily life: the Football Association of Singapore postponed the FA Cup final and third-place play-off scheduled for October 17 at Jurong East Stadium after the Pollutant Standards Index in the western region exceeded 200, with the 24-hour PSI climbing to a record high of 229 for the year on Friday — breaching the threshold for amateur matches.
