Indonesia Cuts Pipeline Gas Exports to Singapore, Diverting Supply to Domestic Power

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · World · GSM News

Indonesia began reducing natural gas exports to Singapore on October 24. Upstream regulator SKK Migas told Channel News Asia the cut amounts to 31 million standard cubic feet per day — 15 million from Natuna and 16 million from Sumatra — and was made to redirect gas to domestic electricity demand.

Singapore's Energy Market Authority said that, based on information from importers, the total reduction amounts to 17 billion British thermal units per day over 18 days, less than 2 per cent of Singapore's total daily gas demand, and that electricity supply can remain stable. About 95 per cent of Singapore's electricity is generated from natural gas, a significant portion of it imported by pipeline from Indonesia.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong responded at the People's Action Party convention on October 25: "Gas supplies are governed by commercial contracts. We hope all parties will honour their commitments, and Singapore's gas importers will take the necessary steps to protect their rights and interests under those contracts." He said Singapore had invested in LNG terminals so it can import gas without relying on pipelines, and is studying nuclear energy, with safety first. The current contract runs until 2028; Indonesia had already indicated during the 2022 negotiations that future sales volumes would be lower.
