Update: Norte Fire Containment Reaches 25% at 570 Acres; Evacuation Orders Remain in Four Zones
Firefighters have made clear progress on Orange County's Norte Fire. In an update posted at 5:53 p.m. on October 17, CAL FIRE said the fire remains at 570 acres, with containment up from 5% in the morning to 25%.
Evacuation orders remain in effect for four zones: SJC04, SJC05 and SJC10-A in San Juan Capistrano, and SCL12 in San Clemente. Orders for San Clemente's SCL13 zone and San Juan Capistrano's SJC10-B zone were lifted earlier today, and residents there may return home.
The fire started at 11:33 a.m. on October 16 near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte in San Clemente and is being managed by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). Six homes have been damaged or destroyed, and two firefighters were taken to a hospital in stable condition. California has secured a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA, which will reimburse 75% of firefighting costs. The cause remains under investigation.
Evacuation shelters are open at the Boys and Girls Club (1 Via Positiva) and the San Juan Capistrano Community Center (25925 Camino del Avion) in San Juan Capistrano, and at the San Clemente Community Center (100 Calle Seville).
