Riverside County Jury Convicts Man, 22, of Second-Degree Murder in 2023 Sky Valley Shooting of Teen
A Riverside County jury on Friday, October 16, after about four days of deliberation, convicted Alexis Yahir Duran, 22, of Cathedral City, of second-degree murder. Prosecutors charged that Duran shot and killed Adam Pineda, 17, of Desert Hot Springs, on February 4, 2023, on Wide Canyon Road in Sky Valley.
Trial evidence showed the 9mm handgun used in the shooting had been illegally acquired by Duran through social media about three weeks earlier. The jury did not find true the firearm and great-bodily-injury enhancements alleged by prosecutors.
Judge Jerry Yang set sentencing for December 18 at the Riverside Hall of Justice. Duran is being held without bail at the Benoit Detention Center; a second-degree murder conviction carries a minimum sentence of 15 years to life. (Reporting via MyNewsLA)
