Car Fire on I-15 in the Cajon Pass Shuts Two Lanes; Occupants Escape Unhurt

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · California · GSM News

At 2:16 p.m. on Friday, October 16, a brown Kia Soul caught fire on the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 15 at the Kenwood Avenue exit in the Cajon Pass, in San Bernardino County. San Bernardino County Fire Department personnel responded and worked to extinguish the flames. Two lanes were completely shut down during firefighting operations because of gusty winds.

The car's occupants were able to get out before emergency crews arrived, according to on-scene reporting, and no injuries were reported. There was no immediate word on what caused the fire.

The Cajon Pass is the I-15 corridor through the San Bernardino Mountains linking the Inland Empire with the High Desert, and it carries heavy Friday afternoon traffic. The incident occurred during the fall Santa Ana wind season, when dry, gusty conditions can help vehicle fires spread; fire officials routinely advise drivers who see smoke to pull fully off the roadway, move occupants beyond the guardrail and call 911.
