Man Fatally Shot on Midtown Manhattan Subway Platform; Gunman in Red Tracksuit at Large as Police Call Shooting Targeted
New York City is a city in New York County, New York. The New York Police Department said a man was shot and killed on Saturday, October 17, at 12:21 p.m. inside the Seventh Avenue subway station at West 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. According to police, the victim and another man got into a dispute on the northbound E train platform; the other man displayed a firearm and shot him once in the chest. The victim was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, and no arrest has been made.
NBC New York and the New York Post, citing police and sources, reported that an E train had pulled into the station and opened its doors moments before the gunfire. A witness, Mauricio Marroquin, said he heard two pops about eight seconds apart as riders scattered; several bystanders surrounded the victim, with one performing chest compressions and another holding his hand and urging him to stay awake. First responders performed CPR on the platform and rushed the man, in cardiac arrest, to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not released the victim's name.
An NYPD spokesperson at the scene said there was 'nothing random between these two individuals,' emphasizing that the shooting was targeted rather than random. Police said the gunman fled on foot northbound on Seventh Avenue and was last seen wearing a red tracksuit, a black vest and a black face mask and carrying a backpack.
MTA official Kemper said it was fortunate no one outside the dispute was hurt, adding that guns have no place in the transit system.
