Mexican Court Sentences Three Men to 158 Years and Nine Months Each for 2024 Baja California Surf-Trip Murders of Australian Brothers and U.S. Friend

A judge in Ensenada, in Mexico's Baja California state, on Friday, October 16, sentenced three men to 158 years and nine months in prison each for the killings of two Australian brothers and their American friend during a 2024 surf trip, according to Reuters, citing a judicial official. The judge also ordered the three defendants to pay compensation to the victims' families, an official from the Baja California state judiciary said.
The defendants are Jesús Gerardo "N," known as "El Kekas," Irineo Francisco "N" and Ángel Jesús "N." A week earlier, the three were found guilty of homicide, aggravated robbery, robbery with violence and vehicle theft with violence. The victims were Australian brothers Callum Robinson, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30.
According to Reuters, the three men were camping and surfing near Punta San José, about 80 km (50 miles) south of Ensenada, when they were reported missing in late April 2024. After a days-long search aided by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), their bodies were found on May 3, 2024, at the bottom of a well; each had gunshot wounds to the head. The pickup truck they were traveling in was found burned several kilometers away, authorities said.
In a related case, Gisell Silva previously pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery with violence and vehicle theft with violence and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in a fast-track proceeding; she was arrested a few days after the bodies were found, when she was 23. "There will never be justice for the loss of a child, but these men will never hurt anyone else again," said Page Rhoad, the American victim's mother, via Zoom after the sentencing. GSM reported on October 11 that the three defendants had been found guilty and that sentencing was set for October 16; this report carries the sentencing outcome.
