71-Year-Old Fisherman Killed by Alligator at Winter Garden Park in Florida

A 71-year-old Winter Garden man, Steven Hamilton, was killed by an alligator while fishing on the shoreline of a retention pond at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park on Friday, October 16, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and local officials.
Winter Garden Fire Rescue crews were called at about 5 p.m. after a 911 call. Other alligators active in the water complicated the rescue and no rescue swimmers were sent in; Hamilton's body was recovered at 7 p.m., Fire Chief Jose Gainza told reporters. An FWC contracted nuisance-alligator trapper removed an 11-foot, 8-inch alligator from the area.
Winter Garden police and the FWC are jointly investigating, and police asked witnesses to contact Detective Kevin Burger at 407-656-3636, extension 6320. The pond sits near Lake Apopka, home to one of Central Florida's largest American alligator populations. It was the second fatal alligator attack in Florida since June 28, when Brittany Clark, 31, died after an attack while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River near Oviedo.
