Davidovich Fokina Upsets Top Seed Zverev in Three Sets to Reach Shanghai Masters Final
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina produced a major upset in the Shanghai Masters semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 17, defeating top seed Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. The No. 25 seed fired 36 winners in the two-hour, two-minute contest, landing 82% of his first serves, to secure only his second victory over Zverev in eight meetings; the previous one came at the 2023 Canadian Open.
Davidovich Fokina earned his first break of the match to take the second set, then broke early in the decider for a 2-0 lead and never relinquished control. It is the second ATP Masters 1000 final of his career, after finishing runner-up in Monte Carlo in 2022. He has now won nine consecutive matches in China after lifting the title in Chengdu last month, having missed the North American hard-court swing in August through injury.
Zverev, a seven-time Masters 1000 champion, reached the Shanghai final in 2019. Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev plays 12th seed Rafael Jodar, 20, in the second semifinal, with the winner to face Davidovich Fokina for the title. (GSM, based on reporting by Reuters)
