Shanghai Masters Final: Davidovich Fokina Rallies Past Jodar for First Masters 1000 Title

SHANGHAI — Alejandro Davidovich Fokina captured the first Masters 1000 title of his career on Sunday, October 18, rallying from a set down to beat fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the Shanghai Masters final.
Davidovich Fokina, who knocked out top seed Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, steadied after a lopsided first set, edged the second-set tiebreak and broke at the key moment in the decider against Jodar, the teenager who had eliminated Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals. The title lifts Davidovich Fokina to a career-high No. 13 in the world rankings on Monday, while Jodar rises to No. 11.
The win is a breakthrough for the Spaniard, who had repeatedly fallen short late in big events before beating two top-tier opponents back-to-back in Shanghai this week. (GSM, from the ATP and wire reports)
