Truck Drives Into Youth Soccer Game in Wichita, Kansas: Boy, 6, and Man, 35, Killed; 11 Injured
A black pickup truck drove onto the fields during a youth soccer game at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on the afternoon of October 17, striking players and spectators. At a press conference, the Wichita Police Department said a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, who were not related, were pronounced dead at the scene. Eleven others, ages 5 to 68 and including five children, were taken to local hospitals; ten had traumatic injuries ranging from bruises to extremely severe, and police said none of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening. In an evening update, police said both people killed were from McPherson.
Police said the driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, had two juveniles in the truck with her; she is in custody and cooperating with investigators. Police have not determined how the truck got onto the field or how fast it was traveling, have not announced a motive, and said whether charges will be filed remains open. A witness told local media the truck continued 100 to 200 yards across the fields after striking people, and dozens of first responders treated the injured, including performing CPR. Police have interviewed more than 30 witnesses and are asking the public for video.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said families had come to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon watching their children play soccer and that she was heartbroken. All events at the complex have been cancelled until further notice, and the Kansas State High School Activities Association has suspended the inaugural girls flag football state championship games scheduled on an adjacent field, with rescheduling details to be announced on October 19.
