WICHITA, Kansas — The Wichita Police Department announced on Sunday, October 18, that the 34-year-old woman who drove onto a youth soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex on October 17 has been released, with no charges filed at this time. Police said investigators made the decision after interviewing witnesses and consulting with the district attorney's office, and that any charging decision awaits the results of toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of her vehicle.

"No charges have been filed at this time, and investigators continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the crash," the department said in its statement.

The crash occurred at about 3:25 p.m. on October 17. The woman's Chevrolet pickup had been parked in a space near the soccer fields before it drove onto one of the fields. Two of her children were inside the truck, and another of her children was playing soccer on a different field at the complex. The crash killed 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both of McPherson; police initially reversed the boy's first and last names in an earlier release and have since corrected it.

Ten other people, ranging in age from 5 to 68 and including five children, were injured, with injuries ranging from bruises to extremely severe, though none appeared life-threatening. An 11th person was taken to a hospital for medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries.

"This is a tragedy," Wichita police spokesman Aaron Moses told reporters at the scene, adding that community members were already rendering aid when first responders arrived. All events at the Stryker Sports Complex have been canceled until further notice. GSM first reported the crash on October 17 and will continue to follow developments on this story line.
