Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

Salt Lake City is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced the recipients of the 2026 Mayor's Artist Awards at a ceremony and reception on the evening of October 13 at Finch Lane Gallery in the Art Barn. Established in 1992, the awards are facilitated by the Salt Lake City Arts Council and honor artists, cultural organizations and creative leaders who significantly enrich Salt Lake City's cultural landscape.

The 2026 awardees are Artes de México en Utah, founded in 2010 under Executive Director Luis Novoa, which fosters cultural understanding through arts programming rooted in Mexican and Latino heritage; Cheryl Ann Cluff, co-founder and longtime managing director of Plan-B Theatre; Russel Albert Daniels, a documentary photographer whose work illuminates overlooked histories of the American West, especially Indigenous experiences; David Ericson, founder of David Ericson Fine Art and a central advocate for Utah art since the late 1970s; and Laura Allred Hurtado, executive director of the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.

"Ninety-five years ago, Salt Lakers broke ground on the Art Barn because they believed art deserved a place in our city, even during the Great Depression," Mendenhall said. "That belief is just as important today. The people we're honoring have helped tell our stories, preserve our history, and create opportunities for others to experience art."
