Charlotte Independence Win First Trophy: Marou Hat Trick Beats Greenville 3-0 for Players' Shield
CHARLOTTE — Charlotte is a city in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The Charlotte Independence clinched the club's first league trophy on Saturday night, October 17, defeating Greenville Triumph 3-0 on the road to win the 2026 USL League One Players' Shield. The Independence become the first Charlotte men's professional soccer team to win a trophy since 1981.
Forward Souaibou Marou scored all three goals: a header from a Joey Skinner cross in the 27th minute for his 16th of the season, a rebound finish in the 75th, and a left-footed strike in the 84th to complete the hat trick. Marou's 18 goals this season lead the Golden Boot race and set a new club single-season record.
Head coach Mike Jeffries earned his 65th USL League One win, making him the winningest manager in league history, while goalkeeper Matt Levy made several big saves to preserve the shutout. Charlotte closes the regular season at Portland Hearts of Pine next weekend before the USL quarterfinals at American Legion Memorial Stadium on November 1.
