Modern Times Café, Which Fed Its Community for Free, to Close at Year's End After 16 Years

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

Minneapolis is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Modern Times Café, a Minneapolis café with a strong community reputation, has announced it will close at the end of this year after nearly 16 years in business. Owner Dylan Alverson wrote on the café's Facebook page: "For the past six years, I've been trying to prove that Modern Times can keep existing. I've exhausted every option without compromising. So we've made the decision to close at the end of the year. It's an extremely difficult decision, and not one made lightly."

Alverson said he is announcing now to spend the next two-plus months celebrating the café's nearly 16 years of "putting creativity over cost and kindness over profit," and will explain within the week why the decision was made and what the final two months will look like. He wrote at the end: "The only way places like Modern Times can exist in the future is to face head-on why this one can't anymore."

In January, when federal immigration agents surged into Minneapolis during the operation codenamed "Operation Metro Surge," Modern Times Café served free food to the community, with no prices on the menu, until the operation ended. Alverson said at the time: "I think I'm betting on humanity. I want to do a good thing, and bet that people are better than people think." FOX 9 previously reported on the café's help to the community during the immigration-enforcement turmoil.
