After Losing a Mayors' Bet, New Orleans Mayor Moreno Honors It by Wearing a Falcons Jersey

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno paid up on Oct. 17, unboxing and putting on an Atlanta Falcons jersey on camera — the price of losing a bet with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens over the "Domecoming" game. "Of course I'm New Orleans' 63rd mayor — Dirty Birds, very funny," Moreno joked.

The two mayors had agreed that the mayor of the winning city in the Domecoming game would send their team's jersey to the loser to wear. The Saints lost to the Falcons, and Moreno honored the bet. The game carried extra meaning: this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Saints' return to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina — the 2006 homecoming game in which Steve Gleason's blocked-punt touchdown became an enduring memory for fans.

The Falcons-Saints "Southern Derby" is always heated; the friendly wager between the mayors added a lighter note to the rivalry, and video of Moreno wearing the rival jersey drew wide discussion on local social media.
