NASCAR Cup Series Races at Phoenix Today; Blaney Takes the Pole

Phoenix is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. The NASCAR Cup Series "Freeway Insurance 500" runs today, Sunday, Oct. 18, at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona, with the green flag at 3 p.m. Eastern and live coverage on USA Network. The race covers 312 laps and 312 miles in three stages (60, 125 and 127 laps).
In qualifying, Ryan Blaney took the pole, with Penske teammate Joey Logano alongside on the front row. Points leader Kyle Larson qualified poorly and will start 22nd, leading second-place Denny Hamlin by 49 points. After this race, three playoff rounds remain — Talladega, Martinsville and Homestead — and the title picture will sharpen further.
The National Weather Service forecasts mostly cloudy turning sunny around the track, with a high near 83°F and dry conditions expected at the start. On Saturday night at the same track, young driver Jesse Love won the O'Reilly Series race, sweeping both stages to win by 0.128 seconds and extending his points lead to 36, in fine form.
