RALEIGH — Raleigh is a city in Wake County, North Carolina. Civic organization RaleighForward released the first results of a housing affordability survey on October 18. Among more than 1,500 residents surveyed across all five City Council districts, nearly 88 percent expressed concern about housing affordability in Raleigh today, with 62.8 percent reporting they are extremely or very concerned. More than 71 percent said the shortage of affordable housing has impacted them personally or affected a family member or close friend, and more than 67 percent said the city does not have enough housing options across income levels and family sizes.

The survey was conducted between September 29 and October 7, with a citywide margin of error of ±2.5 points. In their own words, respondents wrote: "Many friends are unable to afford buying a home in Raleigh despite above average incomes due to high costs, high interest rates & other expenses like student loans," and "2 of my adult sons still live with my husband and I in order to save money... Cost of rentals and housing is unattainable for someone just starting out in employment."

The results arrive as Raleigh's November City Council election approaches and city staff prepare to release an initial draft of the next Comprehensive Plan in early 2027. RaleighForward said the full district-by-district data and policy crosstabs will be released at upcoming events co-hosted with WakeUp Wake County and CityBuilder.
