IRONMAN California Starts in Sacramento Today; Nearly 3,000 Athletes Take On 140.6 Miles

Sacramento is a city in Sacramento County, California. One of North America's largest triathlons, IRONMAN California, takes place in Sacramento today, Sunday, Oct. 18. The race starts at 7 a.m. at Township 9 Park on the American River, with nearly 3,000 triathletes set to tackle the full 140.6 miles.
The course showcases the state capital: athletes begin with a 2.4-mile downriver swim in the Sacramento River, then ride 112 miles through Yolo County's Delta farmland and wine country — the bike course follows South River Road and Babel Slough Road and State Route 84 for two loops — and finish with a 26.2-mile marathon ending at Capitol Mall in front of the State Capitol. Oscar Villegas, Yolo County's District 1 supervisor, welcomed the athletes back to the Delta community to experience its cycling culture and countryside. As one of North America's fastest Ironman courses, the race drew a large field chasing personal bests, and entries sold out long ago.
To support the event, multiple downtown Sacramento streets have been closing in stages since Oct. 13, with closures lasting until equipment is removed on Oct. 20. The city urges residents and visitors to plan travel, allow extra time and take detours. The race is expected to bring significant tourism and hotel revenue.
