Johnson Scores in Overtime as Blue Jackets Blank Rangers 1-0

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

Columbus is a city in Franklin County, Ohio. The Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers staged a goaltenders' duel at Nationwide Arena on Saturday, October 17: scoreless through regulation, the game ended when Kent Johnson took a pass from Zach Werenski and rifled a wrist shot home at 3:26 of overtime for a 1-0 Columbus win.

Jet Greaves made 30 saves for his first shutout of the season and was the game's first star. Rangers goaltender Dylan Garand was nearly as good, stopping 29 of 30 in the loss. Scoring chances were scarce and both power plays came up empty — as the Columbus Dispatch put it, the teams "looked more like soccer teams on skates."

It was Johnson's fourth goal of the season. Coach Rick Bowness borrowed Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy's line about his team: "They have hall-of-famers, we've got gamers." Columbus improved to 3-3-0; the Rangers are 6-3-1. The Blue Jackets visit the Minnesota Wild on Sunday, October 18, looking for back-to-back wins.
