Eagles Place QB Jalen Hurts on Injured Reserve with Blood Clot; Out at Least Four Games

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

Philadelphia is a city in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (a consolidated city-county). The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Saturday, October 17, that starting quarterback Jalen Hurts has been placed on injured reserve and will miss at least four games. ESPN and NFL Network first reported the move, which stems from a superficial blood clot found in Hurts' calf.

In a lengthy statement on Thursday, October 15, the Eagles laid out the timeline: an ultrasound in London on October 10 revealed the clot. Medical staff initially cleared him to play, and he played the entire game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a 19-17 loss. But a follow-up ultrasound on the night of Wednesday, October 14 showed the clot had moved, and the team ruled him out for the Week 6 game against the Carolina Panthers.

After further consultation with doctors and specialists, the Eagles placed Hurts on IR. Under NFL rules he must miss at least four games; with the Eagles' bye following the fourth game, his earliest eligible return is November 22 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Backup Tanner McKee will start at home against the Panthers on Sunday, October 18, with rookie Cole Payton elevated as the backup. McKee, a 2023 sixth-round pick, has appeared in six career games for the Eagles, completing 54 passes for 597 yards with five touchdowns and one interception, going 1-1 as a starter. The Eagles are 2-3 and trail the NFC East leaders.
