Suns Waive Highsmith and Two Others After Preseason Finale; Roster Deadline October 19

Phoenix is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. The Phoenix Suns announced on Saturday, October 17, that they have waived Haywood Highsmith, Kennedy Chandler and Phillip Wheeler, the Arizona Republic reported, as the team trims its roster after the preseason finale and before opening night.
Highsmith's path was a winding one: waived by Phoenix earlier this summer, he re-signed in August on a one-year, $3 million deal, his agent Jerry Dianis confirmed. The 6-foot-6 forward played only seven games for the Suns last season while recovering from a knee injury, averaging 5.4 points and 1.9 rebounds. He returned healthy for training camp and averaged three points in four preseason games but did not play in the October 16 finale against the Utah Jazz. Chandler and Wheeler were training-camp invitees.
NBA teams must finalize rosters by 5 p.m. ET on Monday, October 19 (15 standard contracts plus three two-way deals). The 2026-27 season opens October 20, and the Suns begin on the road at the Portland Trail Blazers on October 21.
