Trail Blazers Waive Former First-Round Pick Sochan, Leaving One Standard Roster Spot Open

Portland is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon. The Portland Trail Blazers announced on Saturday, October 17, that they have waived forward Jeremy Sochan, a move first reported on social media by NBA insider Marc Stein. Sochan was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2022 draft by the San Antonio Spurs and was named to the 2023 All-Rookie Second Team.
He split last season between two teams: 28 games with the Spurs, averaging 4.1 points and 2.6 rebounds, before being waived in February; he then joined the New York Knicks, appeared in 16 regular-season games, and went all the way to the Finals — against the very Spurs team that had cut him. The Knicks won the 2026 NBA championship, earning Sochan a ring.
With Sochan waived, Portland's roster stands at 17 players including three on two-way contracts, with one standard spot still open. The Blazers open the 2026-27 regular season at home against the Phoenix Suns at Moda Center on Wednesday, October 21, and must finalize their 15-man roster by the league's October 19 deadline.
