Kings Waive Payton and Two Others as Roster Is Trimmed for Regular Season
Sacramento is a city in Sacramento County, California. The Sacramento Kings announced on Saturday, October 17, that they have waived Elfrid Payton, Viktor Lakhin and Tristen Newton. HoopsHype's Keith Smith reported the three cuts as part of Sacramento's routine roster trimming ahead of the regular season.
Under NBA rules, teams must set their final rosters by 5 p.m. ET on Monday, October 19, with up to 15 standard contracts and three two-way deals. The 2026-27 season tips off on October 20, and the Kings are making their final decisions.
Payton, a veteran point guard who has played for several NBA teams, is the best known of the three and did not make the final roster. With the preseason over, teams across the league are in the final waiver window, and more moves are expected over the next two days. Sacramento's full 15-man roster will be official after the deadline.
