D.C. Leaf Collection Season Begins Nov. 2; Mayor Muriel Bowser to Kick Off the Season Oct. 19

WASHINGTON — Mayor Muriel Bowser will join the District's Department of Public Works (DPW) at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, to kick off the 2026–2027 leaf collection season, the Mayor's Office announced. Curbside leaf collection across the District begins Monday, Nov. 2.

The kickoff event takes place at 1600 G Street SE, with DPW Interim Director Chris Rodriguez and leaf coordinator Eddie Sanders attending. The event will feature a demonstration on how to prepare discarded pumpkins for composting, and leaf crews will perform collection operations in the vicinity immediately afterward.

Each year, DPW crews collect thousands of tons of leaves from residential streets across all eight wards. The seasonal operation prevents leaves from clogging storm drains and supports the District's sustainability efforts by turning leaves and food scraps into compost instead of sending organic material to landfills. The city asks residents to follow their neighborhood's collection schedule and place leaves at the designated collection points.
