UN Security Council Meets on Sudan Crisis: 20 Million Severely Hungry, 200,000 at Catastrophic Level

The UN Security Council met on Friday, October 16, to discuss the situation in Sudan, according to UN News. Sudan is experiencing the world's largest hunger and displacement crisis: 20 million people face severe hunger, 200,000 have reached the catastrophic — most severe — level of food insecurity, and famine risk is rising in Darfur and Greater Kordofan.
The meeting heard that more than 700,000 displaced people have gathered in Tawila, North Darfur, where food, water and medical care are lacking. On October 10, a drone strike near the Ethiopian border killed 41 displaced people. The Council also discussed the arms embargo, whose scope remains limited to Darfur; Sudan-related sanctions have been extended to December 11.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has lasted more than two years. (GSM, following UN News)
