Halloween Candy Up 71% in Five Years: 100-Piece Bag Averages $16.96 as Increases Slow

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · Life · GSM News

With Halloween approaching, personal-finance site FinanceBuzz's annual candy price study puts the average cost of a 100-piece bag of assorted Halloween candy at $16.96 this year — up 71% from $9.91 in 2021, more than triple the 22% national inflation rate over the same period. That works out to about 17 cents per piece.

The pace of increase has slowed sharply, however: this year's price is just 57 cents above last year's $16.39, a rise of about 3.5%, after increases of $2.45 in 2024 and $2.34 in 2025. The study tracks full-price bulk candy bags at four national chains — Walmart, Target, Kroger and Albertsons — sampling at least 25 bags a year, with past prices taken from archived weekly circulars and this year's from online listings in September.

Federal data cover a broader basket: the Bureau of Labor Statistics' August consumer price index showed candy and chewing gum prices up 8.1% from a year earlier.

Separately, the National Retail Federation's annual survey projects total U.S. Halloween spending of $13.5 billion this year, including about $4.1 billion on candy; 96% of celebrants plan to buy candy, and expected per-person spending is $115.14. Halloween falls on October 31.
