Heavy Rain Floods Streets Across South Florida Early Sunday

MIAMI — Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Heavy rain swept across South Florida before dawn on Sunday, October 18, covering streets with floodwater in neighborhoods from Pompano Beach and Hallandale Beach to Miramar. The National Weather Service office in Miami had issued flood advisories for Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and some areas recorded 2 to 4 inches of rain in just 24 hours.
The flood advisories expired as the rain eased. Forecasters said showers and thunderstorms would linger over South Florida during the day Sunday before conditions gradually cleared. A Small Craft Advisory and a rip current statement for Atlantic waters remained in effect through late Sunday night, with winds around 20 knots and gusts to 25 knots along the coast.
South Florida's low terrain and tide-influenced drainage mean low-lying streets and underground parking garages are prone to flooding during intense downpours. The rain was not associated with a landfalling tropical cyclone. (GSM, based on National Weather Service Miami information)
