Hurricane Trudy Sends Virgin Voyages' Brilliant Lady Up the California Coast Instead of the Mexican Riviera

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · Culture & Travel · GSM News

Virgin Voyages notified passengers on October 16 that its ship Brilliant Lady's seven-night Mexican Riviera sailing from Los Angeles on October 17 would change course, dropping all three Mexican ports in favor of San Francisco, San Diego and Ensenada, with the October 24 return to Los Angeles unchanged.

The ship had been scheduled to call at Cabo San Lucas on October 19, Mazatlán on October 20 and Puerto Vallarta on October 21. Citing National Hurricane Center guidance quoted by Cruise Hive, the company said sailing south could put the ship on the stronger, more dangerous side of the storm — a safety gamble it was not willing to take. Hurricane Trudy briefly strengthened to Category 3 on October 16 before weakening to Category 1.

Under the revised itinerary, Brilliant Lady sails from Los Angeles at 5 p.m. on October 17, spends October 18 at sea, calls at San Francisco from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on October 19, sails October 20, calls at San Diego from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 21 and Ensenada from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 22, spends October 23 at sea and arrives in Los Angeles at 6:30 a.m. on October 24. It is the fourth consecutive Brilliant Lady sailing rerouted by tropical weather. Shore excursions for the cancelled ports booked through Virgin Voyages will be refunded as onboard credit; no additional compensation was announced for this sailing.
