Monday, October 19, 2026 · City · GSM News

ATLANTA — A student died and another was wounded in a shooting on the morning of October 19 at Atlanta Technical College in Atlanta, in Fulton County, Georgia. Atlanta police responded at about 8:45 a.m. to reports of a person shot at the campus at 1560 Metropolitan Parkway SW.

Officers found a male student dead inside a campus bathroom from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A second student had been shot in the leg and was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was alert, conscious and breathing. The college said the injured student's wounds were not life-threatening and that he was expected to recover. Police have not released either student's name or age.

A preliminary police investigation indicates the student who died had been in possession of a gun inside a classroom when it discharged, striking the other student in the leg, before he left the classroom and entered the bathroom. Police emphasized that their findings are preliminary and could change as the investigation continues. They described the shooting as an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the surrounding community.

The college secured the campus after the shooting, and classes and operations later resumed in the afternoon. A college spokesperson said the school's thoughts were with the students, their families and the entire Atlanta Technical College community. The neighboring Atlanta Metropolitan State College community was also notified that there was no known threat to that campus, although an increased police presence could be expected around Atlanta Technical College.
