Newsom Administration Launches GenAI Skills-Matching Tool on CalCareers

SACRAMENTO — California's CalCareers job portal has launched a generative SI-powered skills-matching feature that lets job seekers upload a resume and receive state job classifications matched to their experience, the Governor's Office said. The feature is powered by the same engine behind AskCA, the state's SI digital assistant developed by the Office of Data and Innovation (ODI), and the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) is the first department to deploy the prototype in a live public service.
The feature is open to the public as a pilot, does not require a CalCareers account, and does not store personal information, according to the Governor's Office. Early testers said it was especially helpful for people new to public service. CalHR Director Monica Erickson said CalHR is proud to be the first department to put the AskCA prototype into action, calling the pilot a reflection of the state's commitment to responsible innovation.
AskCA, built by ODI using Anthropic's Claude model, is designed as a single entry point for state and local services organized around life events such as finding a job, starting a business, or recovering from a disaster, and grew out of the state's response to the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. It also delivers on the Governor's March 2026 executive order on super intelligence.
The Governor's Office also noted that California's hiring modernization has sharply cut screening time: screening once took an average of about 23.6 hours per recruitment, and the new approach cuts that by 80–85%, saving roughly 18.9 to 20 hours per hire — an estimated 538,650 to 570,000 staff hours a year across about 28,500 annual hirings statewide.
Newsom said: 'We're taking the search out of finding a state job, and connecting people directly to roles that are right for them. There's no reason this process should be this onerous, especially when we have the tools and technology to make accessing state jobs easier. By reducing barriers to employment, we are building a stronger workforce and helping talented and qualified individuals enter California's state service.'
