Man Killed in Shooting Near Northeast Columbus Mosque; Police Say Mosque Was Not a Target

COLUMBUS — A man was killed in a shooting on the afternoon of October 19 in northeast Columbus, in Franklin County, Ohio. Columbus police said dispatchers received reports of gunfire at 2:11 p.m. in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue, east of Westerville Road and near the Alrahma Mosque; Columbus Division of Fire medics pronounced an adult male dead at the scene at 2:19 p.m. Officers later found a second wounded person nearby; that person's identity and condition have not been released.
Sgt. James Fuqua, a Columbus police spokesman, said at the scene that a funeral was taking place inside the mosque when the shooting occurred, but that the gunfire was unrelated to the mosque and the funeral and was not an attack on the mosque. He said the shooting may have stemmed from an altercation at an apartment complex near the mosque involving two groups of people, a few hundred feet away.
Special agents from the Columbus field division of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also responded to assist Columbus police. Police said no suspects have been identified, and homicide detectives and crime-scene technicians are continuing to investigate. (GSM, based on The Columbus Dispatch and The Associated Press)
