Crime Falls From Top Concern in New Orleans for First Time in 40 Years, LSU Poll Finds

New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. Crime is no longer the top concern of New Orleans residents for the first time in 40 years, according to the city's 2026 Quality of Life survey, conducted by Louisiana State University's Public Policy Research Lab by phone from Sept. 12 to 30 and released by the city on Oct. 12.
Only 14% of residents now rank crime as their top concern, down from 27% in 2024 and 56% in 2022, and 50% say crime is declining. Streets and infrastructure lead instead at 19%. Mayor-elect and council member Helena Moreno holds a 66% approval rating against 14% disapproval, and 52% of residents say they are optimistic about the next five years.
