Kenyan Court Finds Starvation Cult Leader Mackenzie and About 30 Others Guilty of Murder over Deaths of 190 Children and One Adult

A Kenyan court on Monday found starvation cult leader Paul Mackenzie and about 30 others guilty of murder over the deaths of 190 children and one adult, Reuters reported on October 19.
Reuters described the case as one of the world's worst cult-related disasters in recent history. Mackenzie, a former taxi driver who founded his Good News International Church in 2003, is accused of ordering his followers to starve to death in the forest at Shakahola, near the coastal town of Malindi; more than 400 bodies were unearthed from shallow graves there in April 2023. Mackenzie and the other defendants denied the charges.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights welcomed the verdict. (GSM, via Reuters)
