Detroit — Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. The 49th Detroit Free Press Marathon was held on Sunday, October 18, the Detroit Free Press and Fox 2 Detroit reported. The 26.2-mile international course crosses the U.S.–Canada border over the Ambassador Bridge and through the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel, one of the few cross-border marathons in North America; the temperature at race time was around 37 degrees Fahrenheit.

In the men's race, Andy Bowman, 32, of Ferndale won his third consecutive title in 2 hours, 12 minutes, 11 seconds, breaking Greg Meyer's event record of 2:13:07, set in 1980 and untouched for 46 years. "Greg Meyer's record has stood for 46 years, and I can't think of anyone I'd rather see break it than Andy," race director Aaron Velthoven told Fox 2 Detroit. "He's a Detroit-area runner who has made this race his own, and to do it with his wife and son there to meet him at the finish line makes it even more special." Ross Roberson of Zionsville, Indiana, was second in 2:18:30, followed by Noah Verlinde in 2:19:09.

In the women's race, Allison Sherman of Lake Orion won in 2:43:31, taking nearly six minutes off her personal best of 2:49:15 and winning by almost five minutes. Dianne Fisher of Rocky River, Ohio, was second in 2:48:26, and Mary Heinen of Ann Arbor, a University of Michigan law student running her first marathon, was third in 2:49:51. In the International Half-Marathon, JP Flavin of Rochester Hills won the men's race in 1:03:49, and Megan O'Neil, also of Rochester Hills, won the women's race in 1:14:54.
