49th Detroit Free Press Marathon Runs Today; Thousands Pour Through the U.S.-Canada Tunnel

Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. The 49th Detroit Free Press Marathon (presented by MSU Federal Credit Union) set off in Detroit on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 18. Thousands of runners streamed out of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and down Woodward Avenue toward the finish, in the annual cross-border marathon spectacle. Temperatures in Detroit on race morning were only about 37°F (about 3°C), and spectators bundled up in winter coats to cheer the runners on.
Ryszard Szlenkier of Ortonville stood by the course with a megaphone, calling out the names on runners' bibs to cheer them on — he was there to support his wife, McKenzie Szlenkier, 34, running her first marathon. "The shorter the name and the slower the pace, the easier they are to spot," joked the general manager of Somerset Park Apartments in Troy. His enthusiasm caught on, and many runners waved back as they passed.
In the disability division, which finished first, 37-year-old Zach Stinson of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, won in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 49 seconds, more than 30 seconds ahead of runner-up Michael Malone. Stinson had won the division three straight years in 2022, 2023 and 2024, returning strong this year after missing last year's race. The Free Press provided rolling live coverage, with more division results to follow.
In the open division, the men's title went to Andy Bowman in 2 hours, 12 minutes and 11 seconds, a third consecutive championship that broke a 46-year-old race record; the women's champion was Allison Sherman in 2 hours, 43 minutes and 30 seconds.
