On October 18, the Double Ninth Festival on the lunar calendar, Chicago's Chonglou Association in Cook County, Illinois, held a senior-appreciation banquet at its hall, the Chicago Chinese Times reported. The event was called by association president Jianfu Wu, chief adviser Liangfeng Wu and secretary-general Mingjun Wu, and brought together fellow townspeople to celebrate the festival. Huang Zhengdong, chairman of the Wah Lian Association, its president Zheng Zheng, and honorary chairman He Daquan attended as invited guests, joining the association's elders, members and guests.
In his remarks, Jianfu Wu extended festival greetings to the elders, townspeople and community leaders present, saying that respecting and caring for the elderly is a traditional Chinese virtue, that elders have quietly devoted themselves to their families and society throughout their lives, and that the banquet was meant to let townspeople gather, renew ties and carry forward the spirit of honoring seniors. He also thanked executive chair Chen Aiyi, executive vice chairs Chen Jirong and Li Qiqing, and all the officers and volunteers who helped prepare the event.
Huang Zhengdong said the Double Ninth Festival is an important traditional occasion for promoting filial piety and respect for elders, and praised the association for marking the day by gathering elders and townspeople together. Zheng Zheng recalled attending the association's ribbon-cutting when it was founded and commended its growth into a united, well-run organization. He Daquan then offered festival greetings in the Taishan dialect.
The association served a full banquet for the guests, elders and townspeople, who chatted and exchanged greetings in a warm, festive atmosphere.
