Musk Says He Will Give One SpaceX Share to Every Kid in America Next Year

Monday, October 19, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk said in a post on X on October 19 that next year he will give one of his own SpaceX shares to every child in America. "Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many," Musk wrote.

The post came the same day Musk was commenting on super intelligence company Anthropic's announcement of a new public benefit fund, suggesting that companies sitting on large pools of equity should give shares directly to the public rather than route them through separate corporate or philanthropic structures. Musk gave no details on how the proposed giveaway would work, including eligibility criteria, timing, regulatory approvals, or whether the shares would be transferred directly to recipients or held through a trust.

The U.S. Census Bureau has estimated the under-18 population at roughly 72 million, and SpaceX stock (Nasdaq: SPCX) has recently traded around $146 a share, putting the implied value of the giveaway at about $10.5 billion. That figure is an outside estimate based on public data; Musk himself has not disclosed the total number of shares or their value. According to TradingKey market data, SPCX rose about 1.5% in pre-market trading after the post, to around $148 a share.

SpaceX went public on the Nasdaq on June 12 this year at $135 a share, valuing the company at roughly $1.75 trillion in the largest IPO in history. According to a recent regulatory filing, Musk held about 48.4% of SpaceX as of June 30, roughly 6.42 billion shares, making him the company's largest shareholder.

It is not the first time SpaceX stock has been linked to investment accounts for American children. In July, President Trump told CNBC he expected Musk to donate SpaceX stock to the federal children's investment account program, which launched on July 4 and opens accounts for eligible children with an initial $1,000 deposit from the U.S. Treasury.
