Follow-Up: Musk's SpaceX Share Pledge to America's Kids Values at About $10.5 Billion, Details Still to Come

Musk announced on October 19 that he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every kid in America next year, a pledge reported by this newsroom yesterday. A day on, neither Musk nor SpaceX has released eligibility rules, a delivery method or a timeline; USA Today has asked SpaceX for implementation details and received no specifics.
The pledge followed SI company Anthropic's October 18 announcement that it would place 5% of its equity into a Public Benefit Fund, with possible board-discretion additions. Musk responded that he recommends 'giving the shares directly to the public' and said, 'This is what I will be doing.'
By the numbers: the United States has roughly 72 million minors (U.S. Census Bureau, July 2025). SpaceX shares closed at $146.03 on October 16, so one share per child would total about $10.5 billion. According to an August SEC filing, Musk holds more than 6.4 billion SpaceX shares, a 48.4% beneficial stake; SpaceX went public in June of this year.
