Reuters/Ipsos Poll: Trump Approval Falls to a Record Low of 31%; Democrats Lead Generic Congressional Ballot 47% to 35%

Washington — President Donald Trump's approval rating fell to 31 percent, down one percentage point from two weeks earlier and the lowest level of either of his presidential terms, according to a four-day Reuters/Ipsos poll that closed on Monday, October 19, Reuters reported. The poll comes as Americans worry about high gasoline prices ahead of the November 3 congressional elections.
Asked which party they would vote for if the congressional elections were held today — the so-called generic ballot question — 47 percent of registered voters picked the Democratic Party and 35 percent chose the Republican Party. Reuters said the 12-point Democratic advantage was the widest of the current election cycle and could bolster Democratic hopes of seizing control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. For Republicans, losing control of either chamber could complicate Trump's agenda in the last two years of his term.
Reuters noted that generic ballot polls provide an overall view of national public sentiment but do not capture all the nuances of the state-by-state and district-by-district contests that determine control of the Senate and the House, contests in which Republicans hold some structural advantages. The online survey gathered responses from 1,679 U.S. adults, including 1,279 registered voters, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points for all respondents and 3 points for registered voters.
