Surfer Missing Off Point Reyes, California, as Forecasters Warned of 7-to-12-Foot Breaking Waves

Monday, October 19, 2026 · California · GSM News

A surfer has gone missing in the waters off Point Reyes in Marin County, California. The Marin County Sheriff's Office confirmed on Sunday that the man was last spotted surfing off Point Reyes; a search has been launched and his identity has not been released.

The National Weather Service had issued a Beach Hazards Statement in effect from 3 a.m. Saturday until 9 p.m. Sunday, warning of dangerous sneaker waves and powerful rip currents along hundreds of miles of the California coastline, with breaking waves reaching 7 to 12 feet. The alert stretched from the San Francisco coastline through Point Reyes and south to Monterey Bay and Big Sur.

Sneaker waves can surge much farther up the beach than surrounding waves without warning, sweeping people from the sand, rocks and jetties into the ocean. Point Reyes' rugged coastline and shifting conditions pose risks even to experienced mariners and swimmers. Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances of the surfer's disappearance or whether he was caught in a rip current or a sneaker wave. (GSM, based on the New York Post)
