CDPH Issues Immunization Recommendations for 2026-27 Respiratory Virus Season, Adding Emphasis on Health Care Workers

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the West Coast Health Alliance have issued immunization recommendations for the 2026-2027 respiratory virus season, informed by national medical organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
CDPH says immunization is the best protection available against COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and that seasonal immunization reduces serious illness, hospitalization and death, limits community transmission and eases strain on the health care system. The recommendations emphasize protecting those most impacted: the youngest and oldest residents, people at higher risk of complications including those who are pregnant, people living in congregate settings, and those who live or work with higher-risk people. This season adds an emphasis on protecting health care workers from serious illness as they care for their communities.
"I am proud to work with our public health colleagues and immunization leaders in the other West Coast Health Alliance member states to update our recommendations and ensure our communities are well prepared and protected for the 2026-2027 respiratory virus season," said Dr. Erica Pan, State Public Health Officer. The alliance partners California with Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.
