Daytime and Overnight Eastbound I-580 Lane Closures on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Begin Oct. 19

Caltrans announced on October 15 that structural steel cleaning and painting work on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge will begin at 4:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19, requiring daytime and overnight lane closures on eastbound Interstate 580. The project is tentatively scheduled to run through December 29, 2028.
Under the closure schedule, one eastbound lane will close Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 2 p.m., and two lanes will close Monday through Friday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will install suspended work platforms and protective containment, remove existing paint and apply new paint to protect the bridge's structural steel. Caltrans advised motorists to expect fewer available lanes, prepare to merge, allow extra travel time and follow posted signs and crew directions; changeable message signs will provide advance notice.
Caltrans said the closures are needed to ensure the safety of both the traveling public and construction personnel, and that all work is weather dependent and subject to change.
