SB Sheriff's Work Release Program Cleans Summit Valley Road in Hesperia: Two Dumpsters of Trash, 30 Tires Removed

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has released results from a two-day Work Release Program (WRP) community cleanup held Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11, along a several-mile stretch of Summit Valley Road in Hesperia. Crews removed two 40-yard dumpsters' worth of trash and 30 abandoned vehicle tires from the road shoulders.
Authorized by the Board of Supervisors as an alternative to incarceration, the Work Release Program lets participants complete court-ordered service while maintaining employment, continuing their education and strengthening family ties. At the time of the event, approximately 375 participants were enrolled in WRP, with about 250 performing community service at sites throughout the county. The Summit Valley Road event was a pilot designed to make community service operations more flexible and responsive to local needs, and to evaluate expanding the program to other areas; the location spans both unincorporated county territory and the City of Hesperia.
Traffic was restricted to one direction at a time with flaggers during the cleanup. The Sheriff's Department said the traffic control helped prevent a reckless driver from causing a potential collision; the driver was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
