The National Park Service on Oct. 16 announced the latest additions to its American World War II Heritage Cities program, designating 10 new cities and counties spanning Alaska to the U.S. Virgin Islands. The program, begun in 2020 to honor local ties to World War II history, has since recognized locations across 46 states and two territories.

'These designations highlight the enduring legacy of service, sacrifice, innovation, and industrial achievement... and continue to shape our national story,' NPS official Jessica Bowron said in a statement. The designations are advanced with local communities and join the park service's network of World War II commemoration and education resources.
